Tools Used in Ice Carving

All sorts of different shapes and styles can be carved from ice, from fully equipped hotels to small decorative ornaments. Ice can be worked much faster than other more traditional sculpture media, such as marble, but requires just as much skill. Many of the tools used in ice carving have come from other pursuits, such as timber work, but have been adapted for their new purpose.
  1. Chainsaw

    • One of the primary tools of the ice carving industry. Chainsaws are ideal for the initial shaping of the design as they remove large quantities of ice quickly. They are also the fastest method of cutting a large block of ice to a workable size. Smaller handsaws can also be used for more delicate work or by those not used to operating a chainsaw.

    Junichi Keyhole Saw

    • This small slightly curved saw has a very fine narrow end which is used to create details and for very delicate carving. These saws can be used to smooth-over ice which has been rough cut with a chainsaw. The Junichi saw can also be used to add texture to ice as the blade has long teeth for shearing lines into the ice.

    Ice Blower

    • During carving and sculpting ice gives off little tiny fragments that can easily stick to the main sculpture or the floor. These can be tough to remove once stuck and will slow down the process of creating the sculpture. The blower removes these quickly and efficiently before they get a chance to do so, saving the carver time, a vital ability during a competition.

    Iron

    • A regular household use iron can be used to remove unwanted roughness from the surface of the ice and to give a glossy effect. As irons heat un-evenly they need to be moved continuously to ensure a smooth finish with no pits or marks. Small travel or crafters irons can be used to get into tight spaces.

    Protective Gear

    • When working with any power tool it is vital to wear protective gear such as ear defenders, gloves, eye goggles and a hard hat at least. As ice carving tends to be done in sub-zero temperatures warm clothing are an obvious requirement as well.
