Have students create a Valentine's Day wreath to hang up in the home or around the classroom. Students will cut a variety of hearts out of red and pink construction paper. They will then glue the hearts in a circle, each one overlapping with the next, onto a large sheet of paper or poster board. Have them cut out the resulting circle, cutting around the outside and cutting the center. They can then write Valentine's Day messages on each heart, in the style of conversation heart candies.
Students will have the chance to convey what Valentine's Day means to them in the form of a painting. Give the children red and pink acrylic craft paints, along with large sheets of paper and paint brushes. Have them create an image that represents the holiday. This can be anything from a picture of Cupid, to an abstract piece or a portrait of people that they love. These can be put on display around the room, and even presented on an individual basis to the group.
Students can create their own Valentine's themed frames. Purchase plain wooden frames from an arts and crafts store. Have students use paper cut outs, acrylic craft paints, and available craft supplies such as pom poms to decorate the frame to suit the occasion. They can even write someone's name on it and give it to them as a Valentine.
Students can create their own customized t-shirts to wear on Feb. 14. Give students paper and pencils, and have them design their ideal Valentine's Day shirt. Have them bring in plain white t-shirts or garments. Then, help them to use fabric paints to don the clothing with their selected Valentine's Day images. The class can wear their own personal creations on the day, showing off their work to each other as well as their loved ones.
