This is a fun activity using paint, paper and markers. Have the children paint their palms yellow and their fingers blue. Press both hands down firmly on the paper to create the heads of Thing 1 and Thing 2. Have the children use the markers to draw bodies, eyes, a nose and a mouth for each character. Use paint or markers to color their shirts. Draw a scene in the background from the book or have them make up their own.
Have your children draw Thing 1 and Thing 2 individually on paper that is about 6 inches tall and 4 inches wide. Attach the backs of the papers to Popsicle sticks to provide support. Attach another stick to the bottom of the first stick to create a handle. Have the children draw other characters from the story and re-create scenes from the book, or have them create a new story with their characters.
Using standard computer paper, markers and staples, have your children create their own book about Thing 1 and Thing 2. Fold a sheet of paper in half to form four pages (one in front, two in the middle and one on the back). Fold more pages if needed. Have the children create an adventure for Thing 1 and Thing 2. Have them write out the story, or you can write their words for them along the bottom of the pages. Have them to draw the corresponding pictures. Instruct them to create a title for their story and to draw a cover on the very front page. Staple the pages together along the crease. Don't forget to have them write their name on the bottom of the cover as the author.
Visit the PBS Kids for Dr. Seuss website (see Resources) for coloring pages, activities and paper crafts. The site has printable coloring pages with just Thing 1 and Thing 2 on them as well as pages with other characters from the book. Printable images of Thing 1 and Thing 2 can be cut out and used as finger puppets to put on a play.
