Students can create signs that say their name on it, to hang up at home or in the classroom. Give each student a small piece of poster board, and some construction paper. They can cut the letters of their name out of the construction paper, getting creative in the font styling. Have them glue the letters on to the poster board, and decorate the sign in its entirety to represent their own personality and interests. This can be done with acrylic craft paints or any available art supplies. Help students to poke two holes through the top of the sign, and string a piece of string or ribbon through it to aid in hanging the sign.
Students can experiment with graphic art and story telling by creating their own comic strip. Have them draw a story, in five to 10 images, featuring themselves as the main character. The comic can be done in any style and medium they choose. Help them get inspired by sharing various styles of comic illustration with them from the newspaper and comic books.
Students can learn to depict their own surroundings as they see them by painting in the impressionist style. Teach kids about impressionist painters, such as Monet who started the movement, by painting in a free and not completely realistic manner. Have them take a picture of their favorite outdoor scene, and copy it in the form of a painting. They can change aspects of the scene, such as colors, to make it into something new and imaginative.
