Handmade Monogrammed Gifts

Monogrammed gifts serve practical and decorative purposes, whether they are for a longtime friend or a newlywed couple. While monogrammed gifts are available in stores, make your own at home to add that extra personalized touch to the gift. Make an item for the recipient's home or workplace.
  1. Decorative Items

    • Create a handkerchief, pillow or a handmade doll for the home. Choose a color and a fabric that are complementary to the individual's house or to the particular room that she is likely to place the item in. Sew a monogram into these designs once you have completed the stitching. For the pillow, you could add a picture of something special to the recipient to go along with the personalization theme. To make a monogram, draw your picture on graph paper. Hold the graph paper under the fabric and trace the design, using a pen with disappearing ink. Go over the lines with fabric glue and place cording or strips of fabric on the glue to make the design. Buy an iron-on monogram at your local craft shop.

    Practical Items

    • Craft a bookmark for the avid reader, whether you make it out of paper or fabric. Write the monogram on a paper bookmark or sew it onto fabric using the graph paper and the disappearing ink marker method. Purchase ceramic cups and ceramic paints to create a design that is truly personalized, with the monogram on the face of the cup or the handle. Use a stencil or simply draw the monogram on with the ceramic paint.

    Office Gear

    • Help the recipient dress up her cubicle at work or other office space and make a bookstand. Use paint to create the monogram. Personalize a clipboard by covering it in colored or decorative fabric. Put the monogram in big bold letters and include a little bit about what the person does. You could include the monogram followed by "MD" for a doctor. Paint a picture frame and add the person's monogram in one of the corners.

    Stationery

    • Whether it's for the home, office, classroom or simply for the aspiring writer, create some personalized stationery. Buy pretty pieces of heavy paper that are brightly colored or have a funky pattern on them. Create a pattern on the computer if you would like or try stencils on a blank sheet of white paper. Make the monogram small enough that the person can write on the paper and others can read it. Make a monogram in Microsoft Word to use on the stationery.
