To make a bamboo candle holder, you will need to choose bamboo with thin walls with a diameter of between three and five inches. You may want to make matching candle holders in lengths of five inch, seven inch and 10 inches in height. Select bamboo that is long and strong enough to complete your project.
With a pencil, draw your measured lines onto the bamboo. Use a knife or small saw to cut the bamboo just below the node, which is where the two pieces of bamboo join. Be sure the lengths are level on the bottom so they will have a flat base to stand on. You can then add a candle in a glass holder or you can split the bamboo, which will form a natural stand for the candle.
If you are making tall candle holders, wrap a 20-gauge brass wire around the center of the bamboo. Make small splits every quarter of an inch down to the wire. It will fan the bamboo on top. You can also do this on the base, depending on the effect you want. Otherwise you can use an bamboo without splitting by placing a candle in a glass holder into the cut bamboo.
Bamboo has ringed joints and hollow woody-walled stalks. Each bamboo joint separates into cup-like segments. You can seal the joints by pouring a thin layer of melted beeswax to seal them shut. Then pour your melted candle wax into the bamboo segment nearly to the top and place the wick in the center.
