How to Paint a Monochromatic Pastel Painting

A monochromatic work of art uses only one color or hue to color the images. Monochromatic paintings can be done with any color family. If you select blue, this means you will use many shades of blue to create your picture, but you will not be using any red, yellow or green. Monochromatic pictures done with pastels often include more colors than traditional paints might because of the wide variety of pastels available and because they can easily be bended with fingers or blending tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Select several shades of the same color to use in your painting. Set the rest of your pastels aside.

    • 2

Use the end of the pastels to sketch the hard lines of your painting.

    • 3

Turn the pastel stick sideways and color in larger areas of the image. Blend the colors using your fingers or a cotton ball.

    • 4

Continue adding pastel to the image until you are happy with it.

    • 5

Use spray varnish specifically made for pastels or oil paints. Spray a thin coat onto the painting, and allow to dry for up to an hour. Repeat with one to three more coats, allowing to dry between each coat.
