Create a stained-glass template by tracing the pattern onto the appropriately colored glass pieces with a permanent marker. Place the template down on a flat work surface with the glass on top. When using transparent glass, the template can be traced on to the clear glass itself. When using dark glass, place the pattern directly over a light box. This will help you to see the pattern more clearly and allow you to trace the lines of the pattern. When using opalescent glass, place your template and a piece of carbon paper over the glass and etch the pattern onto the glass with a pencil.
Put on safety glasses and score glass on the smooth side, beginning with the point farthest from yourself and moving towards you, with a glass cutter. The glass should be at room temperature for best results. Hold the glass cutters as you would a pencil. Do not apply too much pressure to the glass or else the glass will crack and break. Listen for a scratching sound as you score the glass. Once all the cuts have been made, gently separate the score lines with running pliers.
Wash all pieces of glass in a water and ammonia bath. Dry glass completely with a towel before continuing.
Wrap 7/32 inch copper foil around the edge of each piece of glass. Secure the copper foil to the glass by gently applying pressure around the edges of the glass with a tongue depressor.
Assemble the glass pieces together.
Place assembled work on a heat resistant flat surface. Place soldering tip on iron and set aside to heat up. Apply a light layer of flux to work. Working very slowly, solder seams with iron. Leave a 1/4 inch along the edge of the stained glass to fit the zinc frame over. When finished, allow to cool completely and repeat on back.
Measure the length and width of the fished project. Cut zinc pieces accordingly and attach to framework by soldering the edges. Allow to cool.
Clean the stained glass with a dish soap and baking soda mix to remove any remaining flux chemicals. Allow to dry completely.
Apply patina with a rag over all soldered edges. When finished, set aside for a minute while patina sets. Rinse off with water and allow project to air dry.
