Choose a pattern that you would like to use for a template. Besides the traditional brick & mortar craft stores, there are many online sources available to find patterns as well. Get started by checking out the Resource section in this article.
Select a fabric that will be suitable for the chosen pattern. Light, flimsy fabrics work great for summer outfits, whereas more medium-weight fabrics should be reserved for fall or winter selections, such as jackets or jeans.
Lay the fabric flat with the right side up. Press out any wrinkles. Fold over one edge of the fabric with the right sides together so that the top layer stretches about half way across the bottom layer of fabric, reserving enough for the single cut pattern pieces. Make sure the weave on both layers of the fabric match.
Press pattern pieces flat before using, if necessary. This makes them much easier to work with and allows for a more accurate fitting of the pieces.
Place the pattern pieces so that the weave of the fabric is not diagonal, but so that it runs square to the pattern piece. Start with any pieces that need to be placed on a fold, for instance the back of a shirt or jacket. Next do the double layer pieces, such as the sleeves. Reserve the single layer pattern pieces for last. If more or less fabric needs to be doubled over, adjust as necessary.
Pin the pattern pieces down and then cut them out. Sew the pieces together as directed in the instructions.
