Print or draw a design to put on the silk screen. Remember you will have to paint around and along the lines of this design to transfer it onto the screen, so try to avoid patterns or images that will be complicated to paint.
Place the paper with the image facing up on your work surface. Place the silk screen fame directly over this piece of paper. The screen mesh should be flat against the paper.
Use a pencil to trace your image or design onto the topside of the screen mesh.
Mix the screen filler. Cover your work surface with newspaper. Place the screen horizontally with the frame on raised blocks. The underside of the screen should not be touching anything.
Use a paintbrush to block out the areas you do not want to print with screen filler. You can vary the size of paintbrush depending on the size of the detail you are trying to paint in. Use a smaller paintbrush for finer detail, and a larger paintbrush to block out larger areas. Make sure that the whole screen is evenly covered with screen filler.
Turn the screen over, being careful not to touch the screen mesh. Smooth out any excess filler that may have clumped on the other side of the screen.
Turn the screen back over, so the drawn on side is facing up. Leave the screen in a raised horizontal position to dry overnight. This will allow the screen filler to set without it running.
Check that there are no unfilled pin holes or areas of the screen mesh that should be blocked with screen filler. Paint in any missed areas. Leave to dry overnight.
