Yarn Art Projects

You can use yarn in a vast array of craft projects. Many people learn how to crochet and knit and then make items such as scarves, mittens, hats and even sweaters. However, you don't need to learn how to crochet and knit in order to create crafts with yarn. Adults and children alike can make art using yarn, so go to a store where yarn is sold, pick your favorite color(s) and get ready to create some artistic crafts.
  1. Clothespin Dolls

    • People have created clothespin dolls using yarn, material and clothespins for many years. The proper kind of clothespin for this project is the old-fashioned spring-free wooden style that is shaped like an armless human body. Drill a small hole through the upper body where the shoulders will be and string a long piece of wire with yarn braided around it through the hole as arms. Wrap yarn around each leg separately, and then around the body. Use yarn to create hair by glueing as many strands of yarn, cut as long or short as you would like, to the head. You might also glue a small piece of felt material around the waist of the doll, creating a skirt. Draw the face on with colored markers.

    Jewelry

    • Kids enjoy making jewelry out of yarn. They can complete this craft at home with an adult supervising or at school in an arts and crafts class. Have the children pick out the color of yarn that they would like and give them an assortment of sizes, shapes and colors of beads. Have them make a matching set of a necklace and a bracelet by measuring the yarn around their wrist, allowing a few extra inches than the circumference of their wrist. Do the same with their neck, except add at least 10 inches of extra yarn, or more if they desire. Cut three pieces of yarn of the same length. Have children braid the yarn pieces together and add a few colorful beads of their choice. Have them tie the ends together to wear, making sure they can slip the jewelry on and off easily.

    Yarn Dog

    • Take a piece of cardboard that is approximately 5 or 6 inches long and 3 inches thick. Wrap colored pieces of yarn around the cardboard about 100 times, or more if you want a thicker product. You can use more than one color of yarn if you desire. Slip a piece of yarn about 7 inches long underneath the wrapped yarn, tying it into a secure double knot. On the underneath side of the cardboard, cut through the center of the wrapped pieces of yarn, and then fluff out the loose ends. Paste a half-ball of foam onto the underneath side of the yarn pieces with the loose ends hanging over the ball to hide it. Glue on doll eyes, a felt nose and a pink tongue. Glue on felt feet to the bottom of the flat part of the foam ball. Glue on felt ears.

    Yarn Ornaments

    • Make yarn ornaments by glueing pieces of yarn around foam balls of different sizes. Do some of them in solid traditional holiday colors and others in patterns of two or more colors of yarn. After the yarn is completely dry and is securely stuck to the foam ball, stick on different colors of glitter glue to finish. String a piece of yarn through a large-holed needle and string it through the center of the ornament. Tie one end in a knot to keep it from going through the ball, and tie a loop to hang up on the other end.
