How to Paint With Soft Pastels

Soft pastels date to the 16th century and were used by artists such as Renoir and Degas. They are well liked because there is no drying time and the colors are intense and vivid. You can paint with them in an impressionist style, or in a detailed fashion. Pastels are not colored chalk. They are pure pigment ground into a paste and combined with gum paste to make a stick. These versatile sticks of pigment are becoming more and more popular in the art world.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a type of acid-free paper. The heavier the "tooth," the more pigment the paper will hold. You have a choice of many colors of paper, which will show through the pigment and pull your painting together in the end.

    • 2

Make a thumbnail sketch. You always want to have a plan for your painting before you start.

    • 3

Start to paint with a light touch, not filling the tooth too fast. Block in the shapes with loose random strokes. Choose to paint with dark values first, saving the lighter values for the end. This will prevent muddying of your colors.

    • 4

Layer the pastels to build up color and texture.

    • 5

Distribute light and dark values throughout the painting to make it more interesting.

    • 6

Blend the pastels lightly with your finger on the first layers of the painting.

    • 7

Vary the strokes you use. Switch between swirls, crosshatch, and dabs.

    • 8

End the painting with bolder, heavy strokes of brightly colored pastels.
