Decorating With Hickory Nuts & Pods

Hickory nuts and pods come from trees of the Carya genus, better known as hickory trees. The nuts are edible and can be roasted in a pan or over a fire, but they can also be used as decorative pieces around your house. Whether you buy them in a bag from the store or simply pick them up off the ground in your backyard, you can use hickory nuts to give a rustic feel to your house during the festive holiday season.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a bowl on your coffee table or in your kitchen with hickory nuts. You can even throw in a few other varieties of nuts with them. Nuts are great to look at, but make sure you have a nutcracker available to crack the hickory nuts.

    • 2

Decorate a wooden nutcracker with a few deftly placed hickory nuts. You can place the nuts at the base of the wooden nutcracker or even in its mouth. Throw in a pod or two while you're at it.

    • 3

Line your driveway or your front walk with hickory nuts. This is a great way to use your nuts if you have hundreds of them strewn all over your lawn.

    • 4

Fill a glass jar with alternating layers of dried fruit and hickory nuts. You can use one type of fruit or a variety. Some options are pineapple, blueberries, dates and figs. You can also add a bow around the neck of the jar once you screw the cap on.

Save your hickory nuts for the winter and use them to decorate a snowman.
