How to Make Your Name in 3-D Graffiti

Graffiti artists use 3-D effects to make their tags, or special graffiti names, pop with a minimal number of paint colors. With only two contrasting colors, a tag will look like it is rising off the wall, making it much more visible and distinguishable. This style has gained mainstream popularity, and can often be seen in graphic designs, such as posters and T-shirts. Although it often looks dramatic, recreating this cool 3-D graffiti style is not difficult, and often incorporates simple geometry and letter shapes.

Instructions

  1. Designing the Lettering

    • 1
Practice your drawing in a sketch book.

Draw your name in block or bubble letters in a sketch book. Practice this image a few times to master the letters, even experimenting with strange shapes or angles - anything to make your name more eye catching.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal line across a new sheet of paper in your sketchbook. Draw a point somewhere on that line. This is called the vanishing point. Draw the point to the left of the page if you want the text to pop out to the left or to the right of the page if you want the text to pop to the right.

    • 3

Draw your name in the letters you practiced in the middle of the page in pencil. Drawing it above the line will make it look like the letters are popping upward, and below the line, downward.

    • 4

Draw straight lines with the pencil from each corner of the letters to the vanishing point, using the ruler as your guide. Draw them lightly because you will need to erase them.

    • 5

Connect the vanishing point lines with lines parallel to the original lines of the name. You will not need to do this everywhere because many of the lines will probably be hidden. Erase the remaining vanishing lines.

    • 6
Experimenting with markers help you avoid buying excess spray paint.

Choose two colors of markers that work together. One will be for the face of the graffiti, the other for the 3-D sections. Experiment with different colors and select the one that is most eye catching.
