How to Troubleshoot Tattoo Machines

The art of tattooing has changed little over its centuries-long history. One of the major improvements in tattooing, the tattoo machine, has proved a considerable advancement in both speed and hygiene. This electrically powered machine uses a motor to move an ink-covered needle in and out of the skin at high speeds, minimizing the time needed to perform a tattoo and replacing the traditional needle bar and tapper method of tattooing. Since it is a relatively simple machine, troubleshooting is a straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the clip cord to the power supply and make sure it is seated properly in the grooves at the top of the machine. A loose clip cord results in sporadic or no power to the machine.

    • 2

Verify that the power supply is plugged in to a functioning outlet and that the foot pedal is correctly attached to the power supply.

    • 3

Check that the armature bar is moving freely without touching the front coil. Adjust the contact screw so that the bar moves freely.

    • 4

Check the needle position. If a needle is set out too far with a thick ink, the ink will have trouble entering the skin. Adjust the needle position so ink moves freely.
