How to Set Up Text on a Tattoo Machine

In order to tattoo text you must make a number of voltage alterations on the tattoo machine. There are no specific voltage settings, since the exact voltage will be different for every tattoo machine. However, there's generally no need to set it below 6.0 or above 9.0 volts. You'll need to first set up the machine as a liner for the tattoo's outline. After finishing the outline, change the voltage for shading. Getting the correct voltage is especially necessary for text tattoos because the simplicity of text leaves no room for error.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the tattoo machine, attaching all cords and wires. Wear gloves while handling the machine so as not to spread any germs. Connect the gun to the machine as well.

    • 2

Place the liner needle into the gun. For a liner needle, the tattoo machine's voltage should be set to approximately 6.5 volts. Adjust the dial on the gun's contact screw so that the distance between the front spring and the needle is about the thickness of a dime.

    • 3

Exchange the liner needle for a flat magnum shading needle or a round magnum shading needle. Since a shading needle contains more needles, the voltage should be set to approximately 8.5 volts. This time, however, adjust the dial on the gun's contact screw so that the distance between the front spring and the needle is about the thickness of a nickel. For a lighter shade, decrease the distance; for a darker shade; increase the distance.
