How to Make an 8-Bit Portrait of Yourself

Most of the time, we're concerned with better image quality: higher resolution, more megapixels, more colors. Taking a step back to an earlier time such as the 8-bit era by making an 8-bit style portrait of yourself can be a fun and retro means of self-expression.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose or take a portrait of yourself, or have a friend take it for you. A well-lit image in front of a dark, simple background will work best.

    • 2

Open the picture in a image editor, such as Adobe Photoshop or the free Windows application Paint.

    • 3

Convert the image to 64 colors.

    • 4

Resize the image to 10 percent of its original size using "Nearest Neighbor" sampling.

    • 5

Resize the image to 1000 percent of the new size using "Nearest Neighbor" sampling. This will restore the image to its original size and produce the characteristic blocky look of 8-bit graphics.
