How to Be a Legal Tattoo Artist in California

If you have recently completed your tattoo apprenticeship or are a master tattoo artist moving to California, you are probably eager to get to work. Before opening the doors of your shop, you must properly register your business and your artists with the state of California. Failure to pass California's tattoo certification inspection will result in significant fines and penalties against yourself and your business.

      Complete an apprenticeship with a master tattoo artist. This process typically lasts between two to three years, and will help you gain the necessary knowledge and technical skills to tattoo customers safely.

      Contact the California Department of Health and Public Safety in the county you or your business reside to arrange a health inspection.

      Pay the state of California the inspection and licensing fees.

      Pass the required health and safety inspections. Once the inspection is passed, and all fees have been paid, the state will grant you a certificate which allows you to legally conducted business in the county in which you applied.
