How to Donate a Non-Working Refrigerator to the Arts

Art projects already underway in the local community might need some help from the public in the form of object donations. Many artists build art pieces from all types of materials. Some artists weld steel sculptures, other bury cars, while even others create fantastical dioramas from old, broken-down appliances. Before junking old appliances, consider trying to donate your broken appliances to the arts. An artist could transform a broken refrigerator into a coffin, a vault or even a simple doorway.

Instructions

    • 1

Post a classified ad online or in your local newspaper advertising your broken refrigerator and its intended purpose for use as art. Offer to help load the refrigerator or even transport the refrigerator if capable.

    • 2

Advertise your non-working refrigerator on a materials donation website. Contact the local art authority or city recreation department and ask about local organizations and websites that accept donations. Many organizations recycle and reuse houshold appliances for many purposes.

    • 3

Post flyers advertising your non-working refrigerator in local coffee shops, retail areas and other trendy spaces to be seen by local artists searching for materials. Include a picture of your refrigerator so the artist can get an idea of the materials used.

    • 4

Contact local artists and inquire directly whether or not they are looking for a refrigerator for their projects. Approach artists that mainly use recycled appliances and other objects for their art.

    • 5

Leave the refrigerator at the curb and post a sign stating the condition of the refrigerator. Be creative in your sign design. For example, you might draw eyes and a mouth on the refrigerator, demonstrating its use as art.
