How to Remove a Leather Monogram

A monogram is a display of identity or ownership, often in the form of initials. Towels, luggage and clothing items, like jackets are often adorned with a monogram. Monograms are made from a number of materials, including leather. If you don’t like the look of a monogram on something you own, remove it. A monogram made of leather is secured with stitching that must be removed with a seam ripper.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the tip of a seam ripper underneath one of the stitches in the leather. Each stitch is a loop that is tightened around the leather. Insert the seam ripper underneath a loop, not a knot.

    • 2

Push the seam ripper forward to cut the thread. As you push the seam ripper, it puts pressure on the thread and cuts it with the rounded edge, which is the blade.

    • 3

Position the seam ripper three stitches away from the stitch you just ripped.

    • 4

Slide the tip of the seam ripper underneath the stitch and push it until the thread is cut.

    • 5

Repeat this process, cutting every third stitch, around the entire perimeter of the monogram.

    • 6

Grab the cut ends of the thread with tweezers and pull the thread out of the leather.
