How to Make Graffiti Cut-Outs

Graffiti and street artists, such as Bansky, sometimes use graffiti cut-outs, or stencils, to create their work. They'll adhere the cut-out to the surface they're painting and coat it with a layer of spray paint. When the cut-out is peeled from the wall, it leaves a one-tone image. Cut-outs can be layered, using a different color of paint with each one, to create a multi-toned painting.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the graffiti image with pencil onto a piece of card stock. Use the pencil to shade in all of the medium to shadow areas of the drawing.

    • 2

Tape the four corners of the card stock onto a cutting mat or a piece of cardboard.

    • 3

Cut the shaded areas out of the card stock with the utility knife.

    • 4

Trim any ragged or torn edges with a small pair of shears.

    • 5

Add more colors to the final artwork by making an additional cut-out for each layer of color. A three-tone painting will need one cut-out that's made from the highlights, or white areas, of an image; a second cut-out for the medium tones; and a third cut-out for the blacks and shadow areas.
