How to Get Coffee Stains Out of Oil Paintings

If you take proper care of oil paintings, they can last indefinitely. However, accidents happen, and many substances can stain the canvas. Coffee stains can be tricky to remove but not impossible. Let the coffee dry before beginning the treatment. To remove the coffee stain, you will need a neutralizer, emulsion and varnish. Art shops will sell many kinds of each, so consult a clerk to determine which is best.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a photograph of the painting so that you have a record of what it looks like should you make any mistakes.

    • 2

      Lay the canvas face up.

    • 3

Dab the neutralizer on a piece of cotton and wipe the affected area very gently. The neutralizer will remove dirt that has accumulated on the surface.

    • 4

Apply the emulsion onto a cotton swab and gently dab the coffee stain. Check the swab to make sure you are not removing paint before dabbing again.

    • 5

Varnish the area you have cleaned with a soft brush.

    • 6

Compare the cleaned canvas to your photograph and store the photograph for future reference should you stain it again.
