Historic Homes on Cypress Street in Gate City, VA

Located in southwest Virginia, Gate City has a rich pioneer heritage, which is reflected in many of its historic homes. Gate City is still a small town with a population of slightly more than 2,000 people (2011). As such, it's a quiet place to visit and visitors find themselves browsing vintage and antique stores. Walk by some of Gate City's historic homes on Cypress Street and get a glimpse of the past.
  1. 196 Cypress Street

    • Set back away from the street, 196 Cypress was built in 1900, the height of the Victorian architectural movement in the United States. With three bedrooms, 1.5 baths and more than 2,400 square feet, this home was quite large for its time and required the use of fireplaces and a heat pump to keep its occupants warm. This home perches on the edge of a hill and is backed by deciduous trees.

    171 Cypress Street

    • Built in 1890, 171 Cypress Street is one of the oldest homes on the block and is situated on two level lots. A great example of Colonial-style architecture, its high pitched roof is emphasized inside by its tall ceilings. It has five bedrooms and two bathrooms. Like many homes built in the 19th Century in the area, 171 Cypress Street has a long, central hallway with a straight staircase and several fireplaces, including a fireplace in one of the bathrooms. Chandeliers light the foyer and main hallway, and the home has hardwood floors throughout its more than 3,000 square feet.

    231 Cypress Street

    • 231 Cypress Street was built in 1903. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms and is about 2,200 square feet. One of the oldest homes on Cypress Street, this historic home has changed hands many times and its occupants have all left their marks on the home. It is situated at the base of a hill and has been updated several times.

    104 Cypress Street

    • Built in 1912, 104 Cypress Street has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The Arts & Crafts movement was beginning to have an influence on the Victorian architecture which had dominated residential construction during the turn of the century. Both influences can be seen in the architecture of this Gate City historic home. As with most homes constructed during this time, 104 Cypress has fireplaces to help with heating.
