Advice for Pancake Art

Making food fun for kids can be an art. Sometimes the best way to get kids to eat healthy food is to present it in a new and exciting way. Pancakes are a great example of making food into art. Some parents spend a lot of time shaping pancakes into fun shapes and images to present to kids. It can be as simple as adding a little color to pancake batter to make it pink or purple.
  1. Basics

    • Working with the right kind of batter is important in creating pancake art. Fresh mix from a small box is best and it will result in fluffier pancakes. Using additional ingredients such as lemon juice, sugar and vanilla will also liven up the flavor of the pancakes. The pancake mix should then be placed on a non-stick grill in the shape desired before the heat is turned on. Once the shape is formed, cook at 200 degrees until done. Each individual shape should be laid out on a separate plate to cool.

    Painting

    • Adding color to pancake art can change a boring pancake into a strawberry, heart or rainbow. The simplest form of pancake art is cooking a pancake and then adding color with syrup. Syrup can be placed into several different small containers holding a different food color. Kids can take small paintbrushes and swirl different colors around on their pancake or they can paint a small picture. The nice thing about this pancake art is that a child can create it himself.

    Writing

    • To write words in pancake art, an individual must write the words backward on the grill with the pancake batter. The words should cook for a few minutes and then extra batter should be added. This will make the original batter darker from cooking longer and it will make the words stand out. Outlining is also useful in pancake art. It can make a shape stand out. For example, in creating an individual's face, the outline of the face should be done on the grill first. Once the outline has cooked for a few minutes, the rest of the face can be filled in with more batter. The outline will appear darker because it cooked longer. This will enable the outline of the shape to be noticed.

    Shapes

    • The best thing about pancake art is that an individual can take colors and create anything. By using different colors of pancake batter, an individual can create flowers, a sun or even Hello Kitty. To make different colors simply add food coloring to the pancake batter and fill the different colors into separate squeeze bottles with small tips. Pink batter can be squeezed onto a grill in the shape of a flower. Then green batter can be squeezed separately into the shape of a stem. Once they are cooked, then can be placed on a plate together as a flower.
