The initial step to creating a comic strip is taking the time to brainstorm ideas. Think about the point of view that you want your comic strip to represent, whether it is a funny commentary about society or a satire about politics. Write down all of your ideas for the plot on paper, and worry about developing the ideas later. Then, begin character development by brainstorming name ideas and personality types for your characters. Once you decide on the personalities of your characters, visualize what they look like and sketch the ideas on paper.
Now that you have brainstormed ideas for your comic strip, you can start the process of writing the story. When writing, you will be breaking down your original ideas into shorter stories. To create the narrative, decide on the conversation your characters are having with the readers, or amongst themselves, and develop the plot of your story. Think about the original ideas and point of view you brainstormed, and write them as a witty anecdote. Think about your target audience and how to appeal to them.
After writing the basic concept of your story, you will break the ideas down even further and organize your story into a sequence of animations to create the comic strip. Think about the background of your scenes, how much time will pass between each sequence, and the conversation between the characters in each sequence. This is the time to make final organizational decisions and plan the layout of your story. Decide whether you will use speech balloons and where you will place them in each sequence. Sketch the basic layout, words and characters within each sequence to complete your storyboard.
Once you have your story broken down and laid out in a storyboard, you can begin the process of designing and illustrating. Keep your plot, characters and backgrounds in mind when designing. Draw the boxes for the strip on paper and begin creating your designs. You can choose from a variety of art mediums to create your comic strip, such as simplistic black-and-white pencil or ink drawings or colored pencil drawings. Draw your designs with pencil and paint the designs with watercolors, or use artist pastels to draw them. Create lettering using pen and ink, keeping your letters small but legible.
