Sketch out the basics of your wall hanging on a piece of paper. Decide what colors you need and how they will fit into the design. Sort through your puzzles and decide which ones you will use or check local thrift shops and toy resale shops for used puzzles if you don’t want to use those you have. Sort the puzzle pieces by color and size.
Draw the details of your picture on the canvas. Choose an area to begin your art and collect the puzzle pieces you need to create the details in that section.
Set the puzzle piece on a cutting board and draw the shape you need on the puzzle piece. Use a sharp craft knife to shave the excess material off the puzzle piece. Set the puzzle piece in place on the canvas and choose a new puzzle piece with colors that blend well with your first piece.
Use the sides of the trimmed puzzle piece to determine the shape of the new puzzle piece on the side where the two pieces will touch. Shape the rest of the puzzle piece as you did the first piece. Lay the two pieces together and make sure they match up. Select the next puzzle piece by color and trim it to fit with the two pieces you have altered.
Continue the process, taking one section at a time and staying within the lines of your detailed drawing. Use the puzzle pieces already trimmed to begin trimming a new piece. Use the colors on the puzzle pieces to blend your colors. Glue the pieces into a section once you have all the puzzle pieces making that part of the picture complete. For example, in a woodland scene, begin with the a tree trunk and trim all the pieces that make the tree trunk. Begin the section that includes the foliage and trim the pieces that form the border between the two sections. When you have the border complete, glue the trunk pieces into place, except for those that will abut other parts of your picture. With the border pieces loose, you can use them to trim the borders of the neighboring section before you glue the remaining pieces of your trunk into place.
Leave small spaces between sections to create contrast and a more three-dimensional effect. Draw or paint lines in the section to produce more definition.
Frame the finished product and attach picture wire to the back of the frame using a stapler. Hang the art on a picture hook nailed into the wall.
