How to Make Latex Plaster for a Mask

Plaster compounds are commonly used to patch up materials in construction, but they can also be used in art. When wet, plaster's malleability allows it to adhere to the shape of solid objects before hardening into a mold. And its plaster’s impressionability that makes it perfect for casting molds. If you’d like to create a latex mask, common plaster of Paris offers a low-cost solution for casting your latex molds.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure room temperate water and plaster powder into two separate buckets. Follow the ratio of water to powder that's printed on the plaster package.

    • 2

Pour the plaster powder into the bucket filled with water -- in a slow, continuous stream. Allow the plaster and water mixture to soak for approximately 4 minutes.

    • 3

Stir the plaster and water mixture evenly for approximately 5 minutes, or as directed on the product's label, using a paint stirrer stick. For combinations of plaster and water that weigh over 5 pounds, you'll need to use a mechanical mixer to ensure the powder and water mixes without bubbles or inconsistencies.

    • 4

Allow the mixture to sit for 3 more minutes, and then stir it for about 3 more minutes. Cover the mixture with an airtight lid, until you're ready to cast your mold.
