How to Make a Life Mask

A life mask is a sculpture created from a person's face. The artist uses plaster strips to create the sculpture. Similar to casting a child's hand for a keepsake the life mask casts the facial features. Artists are able to take the project further by creating a piece of unique artwork such as casting hands and having the facemask sitting in the hands or adding a hat or other item that represents the person.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover hair around the face with a scarf or headband. If the person has long hair, tie it back. Protect clothing by covering it with a towel or sheet.

    • 2

Spread petroleum jelly over the entire face, including eyebrows, eyelashes and lips. Pay special attention to around the hairline.

    • 3

Cut the plaster gauze strips into workable pieces.

    • 4

Place a strip of plaster gauze in warm water enough to moisten it but not enough to make it dripping wet.

    • 5

Begin the facemask by applying strips of plaster to the outer edge of the face and then work your way inwards. Evenly smooth out the wet plaster on the strips as you go. Cover the nose and mouth last and use a straw to help the person breath.

    • 6

Repeat the process until you have three layers.

    • 7

Let the facemask harden for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. It should be hard enough to take off without breaking. The person can help by wiggling his jaw and face to help loosen the casting.

    • 8

Clean off the petroleum jelly and plaster with soap and water.

    • 9

Cover the hole created by the straw with the above process. Let the mask dry overnight.
