How to Make Paper Collage Sculpture of Figures

Creating a collage, artwork made when you combine magazine cutouts, personal artwork, coloring book cutouts, or newspaper cutouts and other objects that are not normally seen together, is fun. To enhance the effect, create a collage relief sculpture with foamboard to raise some of the main cutouts within the composition. Use collages to relay a certain message, show certain trends, or just to show the beauty of photography, objects and messages when placed together in a certain way.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through magazines to find photographs of people in interesting poses. Cut out any picture that interests you. Find pictures of faces, bodies, of women, children and men; make sure the figures are of different sizes. Cut out more pictures than you actually need to have a wide selection.

    • 2

Arrange the pictures on the illustration board in a pleasing manner. Tear, cut and overlap the pictures to create a more interesting composition. Experiment with different compositions until you find one you like.

    • 3

Look for unusual objects such as feathers, craft beads, recycled materials or other items to glue to your collage. Integrate these items into your collage without gluing them in place just yet.

    • 4

Remove the cutouts that you want to be a focal point; place one on a piece of foamboard. Draw an outline of the cutout on the foamboard with a pencil. Remove the cutout and cut on the inside of the outline. Apply glue with the brush to the foamboard to apply the magazine cutout. Press the picture to the foamboard in all areas to eliminate the air bubbles. Glue the newly made raised figure to the illustration board where you want it. Do the same for the other cutouts that you want to raise on your sculpture to make them focal points. Press down firmly to eliminate air bubbles.

    • 5

Apply glue with the paintbrush to all other cutouts and place in the appropriate areas. Press firmly over the piece to eliminate any air bubbles. Glue the other objects in the places, using creative ways to glue objects that are unusually difficult to glue in place. For instance, glue bits of colored paper, fabric and netting over and around the object, allowing these materials to enhance the look and to hold the item in place.

Allow the collage to dry completely. Spray on a clear acrylic sealer or use a spray gloss sealer to add a bit of shine, keeping your spray paint about 6 to 12 inches from your collage as you spray. Spray your first coat; allow it to dry for an hour. Spray a second coat, and allow the overall collage to dry for an additional 24 hours. Take your collage to be framed.
