How to Make a Polaroid Collage

Learning how to make a collage with Polaroid pictures is a matter of cutting and pasting. The art term collage comes from the French word for glue, "coller." To make a collage, you glue down a variety of materials on one surface. The materials will overlap one another to either blend in for a unified look or to stand out for a more juxtaposed look. Choose a flat support for the base, depending on the materials used. For light materials such as paper and feathers, paper may be used, but for heavier materials, consider using cardboard or canvas.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on a support for your collage, such as paper, poster board, canvas or the backing from a picture frame. Anything flat will work.

    • 2

Gather the Polaroid pictures and other items for the collage. There are several items that work well in a collage, such as fabric, greeting cards, leaves, buttons, feathers and beads. Cut out words out from mail advertisements, magazines and newspapers. Look around and find what will work to help pull the collage together.

    • 3

Determine the type of glue to use. You can use a basic white glue, but there are glues created just for art works, such as the paper glue Zip Dry. Zip Dry works well with collages because it will not wrinkle or warp the paper. Other types of art glues include Mod Podge or Collage Pauge, which are decoupage all-in-one glues and sealers. All of these glues can be found in a local art store.

    • 4

Build your Polaroid collage by first laying the base down on the floor and arrange the items in a display. Play around with the arrangement of the items until satisfied. Cut items into different shapes.

    • 5

Remove the white border of the Polaroid's edge, if desired. Use a damp towel to wipe off the emulsion and wash your hands afterward.

    • 6

      Glue everything down.

    • 7

Finish the collage by adding paint and drawings or by using stamps and stencil in between the Polaroid pictures and other materials.

    • 8

      Let dry before hanging.
