How to Make Splats on Graffiti

Graffiti is consistently gaining recognition and appreciation as an urban art form with dedicated artists and fans both. While the artform's style is highly varied, there are a few basic common methods found throughout the genre. One of these is the paint splat. The splat is a blotch of paint on the surface either isolated over an existing image or incorporated within the graffiti artwork itself. Splats are supposed to appear random, so creating them using a paint-filled balloon can yield the random and surprising results needed, especially when the paint is applied in contrasting colors.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a funnel point into the neck of a rubber balloon. Fill the balloon with the latex paint. Don't fill the balloon to the breaking point. Add enough paint so that the balloon will break upon impact but not during transportation, about half-full. Remove the funnel and tie the neck of the balloon tightly to avoid spillage.

    • 2

Create at least two colors of paint-filled balloons, matching the colors of the balloons with the colors of the paint inside if possible, to avoid mistakes. Use contrasting colors for best splat results, one light and one dark.

    • 3

Standing at a distance of about 15 feet, hurl the dark paint against the surface with enough force to break the balloon on impact. The more force used the more of a paint spread you will likely get. Remove any balloon fragments from the surface; don't smear the paint as you do so.

    • 4

Hurl the light-colored paint onto the dark-colored paint to create a secondary contrasting splat. Use slightly less force with the second balloon so that you don't cover the first splash of paint completely. Remove the balloon fragments from the area.
