How to Frame Pastels

Once upon a time artists and home designers were told that they should never under any circumstances frame pastels. Experts claimed that doing this would cause the art to press against the glass, which would smudge the piece and possibly even destroy it. Then artists began playing around with the framing process and learned that they could actually do it without damaging the art. If you want to frame a pastel you need to have the right tools and use a spacer. Read on to learn how to frame pastels.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an acid-free mount made of museum board from a professional framing store or a craft store. These mounts will last for years to come and they don’t turn yellow like some other boards do.

    • 2

Choose a mat to use in the frame if you want one. The mat will be a large border around the edges of the pastel and will make it look more professional. At the same time you should also purchase a frame to use for the pastel. The frame should be slightly larger than your image so you don’t need to trim down the picture.

    • 3

Remove the back of the frame, and place your mount board on top of it. You may need to trim the mount down slightly to fit the frame, depending on the size you purchased. You can use a utility knife or even a pair of scissors to do this task.

    • 4

Lay a small piece of adhesive tape on top of the mount and place the pastel on top of the mount to hold the pastel in place. Position your spacers at the top of the pastel and at the bottom. These spaces will prevent the mat or glass from touching the pastel, which can smudge the piece.

    • 5

Place your mat directly on top of the spacers and lay the glass on top of that. This creates enough pressure to hold the spacers in place. Put your frame on top of the glass and gently turn the entire piece over to close up the clasps on the back of the frame. Your pastel should now be framed and in good condition.
