How to Hang Fiber Art

People use weavings, quilts and other fiber art pieces for display on walls, but fiber art pieces need special hanging hardware before displaying. The easiest way is to attach loops to the fiber art and slide through a curtain rod. This process is quick, simple and doesn't damage the original fiber art. Another method for hanging a piece of fiber art is using hook and loop tape. It is attached to the back of the fiber art and another a piece is attached to the wall. Press the hook and loop pieces together, attaching the art to the wall without anything in view.

Things You'll Need

  • Purse strapping material
  • Scissors
  • Safety pins (2 to 3 inch long)
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Adhesive hook and loop tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three 4-inch long pieces of purse strapping material. These make the loops for hanging the fiber art.

    • 2

Select which side is the top of the art piece. If the art piece doesn't have a top and bottom, choose one side for the top. If it is a quilt showing birds flying over the ground, it is obvious which is which, but if it's an abstract design, decide which way looks like the top.

    • 3

Fold one piece of strapping material in half so it is 2 inches. Measure 1½-inches from the top, left edge of the fiber art piece, and go down one inch from the top. Attach the two unattached sides of the purse strapping material onto the spot using a safety pin. Repeat the procedure 1½-inches from the top, right edge.

    • 4

Place a purse strap loop in the center of the top of the fiber art. If the art is more than 4 feet long, place another loop on the top left and right side, centered between the center loop and the right and left edges of the fiber art piece. For instance, if the piece is 5 foot long, the center loop is 30 inches from the left edge, place another loop 15 inches from the left edge, and another loop 15 inches from the right edge.

    • 5

Sew the straps into place using a needle and thread. This step is optional. If you want a permanent display, you should sew it on, but if it is temporary, add an extra safety pin on each loop.

    • 6

Attach two decorative curtain rod hangers where you want the fiber art displayed. Slide the rod through the loops and hang.

Hang Using Hook and Loop Tape

    • 7

Select the top of the fiber art piece. If the fiber art piece doesn't have a top and bottom, choose one side for the top. If it is a quilt showing birds flying over the ground, it is obvious which is which, but if it's an abstract design, decide which should be the top.

    • 8

Measure and cut the hook and loop tape, so it fits across the top of the fiber art. If it is odd shaped, cut the hook and loop tape into short pieces, and lay the pieces on the fiber art. Arrange the pieces of hook and loop tape so they fit. Do not separate the hook and loop sides of the tape.

    • 9

Peel the backing material from one side of the hook and loop tape. Press the exposed adhesive side of the hook and loop tape at the top all the way across the fiber art piece. If the piece is heavy, pull the hook and loop tape apart after attaching it to the fiber art, and attach the hook and loop tape in several places with stick pins.

    • 10

Peel the backing material from the other side of the hook and loop tape, and position the fiber art piece on the wall. Press the adhesive side of the hook and loop tape to the wall. Make sure it is where you want it displayed. Once it is pressed to the wall, you can't move it. You need a second person helping you on this step. If the piece is heavy, pull the hook and loop tape apart after attaching it to the wall, and put several tacks into the hook and loop tape piece on the wall.
