Make heart-shaped clay paperweights with self-hardening clay, wax paper, water, a heart-shaped cookie cutter, acrylic paint and a rolling pin. Place a ball of clay on a piece of wax paper and roll it out. If the clay is too hard, add a small dab of water until it loosens. Take the heart-shaped cookie cutter and press it into the flattened clay. For added decoration, press seashells and beads into the clay. Allow the clay to harden overnight and then paint with acrylic paint.
Older children and adults can use their hands to try to make a 3D shape out of the clay. They can also use a plastic knife or a craft stick to define the heart.
Create a magic 8 ball using a baby food jar with lid, 1-inch polystyrene foam ball, white craft foam, permanent marker, hot glue gun, model clay and scissors. Clean and dry the baby food jar and sit to the side. Use your thumb to press the polystyrene foam ball into a hard, flat surface to make it cube-shaped. Cut hearts out of the white foam and write words, such as "yes," "no," "maybe," "not a chance" and "definitely" on each heart. Hot glue the hearts to each side of the polystyrene foam cube. Allow the glue to dry completely. Fill the baby food jar all turned upside down, use masking tape to seal the lid. Take the modeling clay and cover the outside of the baby food jar, leaving the bottom of the jar open so you can see the cube inside. Add other colors of clay to make designs on your magic 8 ball.
You and your children can make your own clay snowmen using homemade clay. Make the clay by putting 2/3 cup of salt, 1/3 cup of water and 1/3 cup of baking soda in a saucepan and bringing it to a boil. In a separate bowl, mix 1/2-cup cornstarch and 1/4 cup of water. After the mixture comes to a boil, remove it from the heat and pour in the cornstarch mix. Stir for at least 2 minutes and then pour onto a sheet of wax paper. Allow the mixture to cool completely. Roll the white clay into several balls of various sizes to make snowmen. Decorate the snowmen using accessories, such as fabric, beads, googly eyes, felt and sequins.
