Bring the right materials together to ship the globe safely and securely. A screwdriver is necessary to disassemble the globe, while a cardboard box, bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts are essential for packaging. Masking tape and packing tape are also necessary to complete the packaging. Having excess package material is better than having too little. Globes are extremely fragile and require sufficient cushioning to protect the pieces while in transit.
Dismantling the globe before packaging is very important. Most globe shipments are at a major risk when they remain intact during the shipping progress. The rapid and consistent vibrations of the globe frame can easily cause the globe to crack or shatter. Unscrew both glass body sides from the globe frame. Most glass bodies contain three to four screws on the perimeter.
Individually package each piece of the globe --- each glass body side and the frame --- separate from the other. Bubble wrap is a wise choice when packing. Securing bubble wrap tightly around the pieces and adhering masking tape to hold the wrap in place keeps materials secured on all sides. Ensure all areas are covered by bubble wrap so no piece is at risk of sliding out or becoming partially exposed and chipping.
A 20- by 20- by 20-inch box is a minimum necessity for shipping a glass gas pump globe. These dimensions give just enough room for the globe to be dismantled and packed as individual pieces, while including Styrofoam pieces to surround and submerge the bubble wrap. Layer the bottom of the box with foam peanuts before inserting the pieces to ensure no sides of the globe pieces directly contact the box.
