How to Turn a Photograph into a Fine Art Painting on a Mac

Adobe Creative Suite for Mac gives you the ability to use software filters to manipulate a photographic image. In Photoshop for Mac, you can change any photograph using one of more than 40 filters ranging from fresco to charcoal pencil. Each of these filters alters your photograph on screen so you can decide which artistic look works best for your image. You can also alter the colors, brightness and contrast in your image to get the fine art you want.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your photographic image in Photoshop.

    • 2

Save your file as a copy or by another name. In case you don't like your first draft, you will have an original copy of the image. Click "File," then "Save As" and choose a new name for the file.

    • 3

Choose your artistic filer. Go to "Filter" from the main menu. You will see a drop-down menu of multiple choices.

    • 4

Choose "Artistic" from the list, then "Colored Pencil," the first option under Artistic. You will not be locked in to using the "Colored Pencil" option. Photoshop opens your image in a new window with all the artistic filters available for you to choose. Depending on the size of your image, it might take some time for the image to completely open. In the lower left of the screen, you see a bar showing the percentage of the image that is opened and the size of the image in the viewer as 100 percent.

    • 5

Click where it says 100 percent. A list of size options pops up ranging from 6 percent to 1,600 percent as well as "Fit in Viewer." Doing this allows you to see the entire image. Seeing the entire image in the window helps you decide which of the 45 choices Photoshop gives you to alter your photo so it resembles a piece of fine art.

    • 6

Scroll through all the filters available. You do not need to save your image until you decide which artistic filter gives you the fine art look you want. Click "OK" when you have chosen the filter. Photoshop takes the image back to the main viewer with the filter installed.

    • 7

Save your new work. Scroll down to "Save" from the main "File" menu or hit "Command" + "S."

    • 8

Print your image. See whether you have achieved the fine art look you wanted. If not, try the process over again with a different filter.
