How to Paint in Hans Schwarz Style

Hans Schwarz was a well-known Jewish artist who was famous for his use of color and line. He was born in Vienna in 1922 and attended art school there from 1937 to 1938. His father died at Auschwitz, and Schwarz was expelled from Vienna by Hitler's forces in 1938. He then moved to Birmingham, England, where he studied art for two years. He kept painting right up to his death in 2003. Any artist who wishes to emulate Schwarz's talent and skills will need to take on some of his painting techniques and work habits.

Experiment and be adventurous in your use of color. Schwarz used paint indiscriminately, and objects in his paintings sometimes ended up being an altogether different color than they were in real life. This creativity and risk-taking in his career is what helped make him the famous artist he is known as today.

Hans Schwarz experimented with many different types of paint.

Use many types of paint until you discover what works for you. Schwarz used oils, acrylics and even house paint in his work until he finally used some watercolors by accident. He became so enamored with this paint that he completed fifty watercolors in his first month of using them. Do not necessarily choose watercolors as your favorite paint - choose what works best for you and the type of painting you do.

Work in as many different mediums as you can until you can establish yourself as a freelance artist. Schwarz began his career as an illustrator and worked for others until he became prolific enough to become self-employed in 1964. He painted landscapes and sculpted, until painting portraits became his favorite form of art. Take his examples of the steps to fame to heart and work your own way into your artistic profession.

Make each section of canvas is just as important as the next. Schwarz believed that every portion of a work in progress was just as important as the the rest of the project, giving an overall quality to every piece of art he produced. Such focused artistic integrity is essential to produce quality works.

Maintain a sense of modesty about your undertakings. Schwarz was an intense artist, though unassuming and lacking in conceit or pride. His goal was to keep painting until the end, which he did - painting his last work of art and selling it just before he died in 2003.
