Choose and print out a reference picture of the Nightbringer. This will help you create an accurate figure when sketching the character and help with highlighting and shading when you paint.
Trace or draw the outline image of the Nightbringer onto the water color paper, using a pencil. When you are drawing, use only a slight amount of pressure to create a light line. Because water colors are transparent, dark pencil marks might show up after the painting is complete.
Dip the paint brush into the water until the bristles are saturated. Select the paint for shading the Nightbringer and gather it onto the brush.
Shade the figure of the Nightbringer. Apply paint to the shadowy areas of the Nightbringer to create contrast and a three-dimensional effect for the overall painting. To create a vague, mysterious shape, use small, circular brush strokes. Use your reference picture as a guide to determine where to paint the lowlights of the Nightbringer. Make sure to include the shadows of muscles and of fabric twists.
Clean the paintbrush. Dip the brush in the cup of water. Pull the paint out of the wet brush by pressing a paper towel around the brush head and pulling the paint from the bristles. Repeat until the paint brush is clean.
Paint the highlights for the Nightbringer. Select a color for the light areas of the Nightbringer. Apply the paint in small, swirling strokes.
Clean the paint brush.
Dip the paintbrush in water. Swirl the light and dark colors together to fill in the unpainted portions of the Nightbringer. Allow the paint to dry completely before continuing to the next step.
Add painted details to the Nightbringer's face, cloak and scythe, using your reference picture as a guide. If desired, paint a background.
