How to Make a Cartoon Style Brick Wall

To most easily draw a brick wall, draw a regular grid of horizontal and vertical lines. But realize that this easy wall will look unconvincing. In actual brick walls, each brick does not lie directly over a lower one. Instead, you could draw a realistic wall, carefully drafting rough edges and reproducing actual brick texture. For a cartoon wall, compromise between these styles. Draw a wall with rows that vary but also feature the bold, straight lines that suit the cartoon medium.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a series of horizontal lines, using your straightedge as a guide. Space them equally far apart. For example, leave 5 millimeters between each line.

    • 2

Turn the straightedge vertically, and move it to the left part of the grid. Draw vertical lines connecting every second horizontal line.

    • 3

Move the straightedge to the right, approximately four times as far as the distance between each horizontal line. With this example, move the straightedge 2 centimeters.

    • 4

Connect the same horizontal lines that you connected in Step 1.

    • 5

Repeat the previous two steps until you've added short vertical lines across the entire horizontal length of the wall.

    • 6

Return the straightedge to the left side of the grid. Position it between the first two sets of vertical lines.

    • 7

Draw new vertical lines connecting each horizontal line that you've not yet joined.

    • 8

Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the new vertical lines until vertical lines join all of the grids' rows.
