How to Use Faber-Castell Manga Pens

Faber-Castell has a line of manga pens which includes both grayscale and colors. These pens use India ink, which dries quickly to leave permanent lines. Some kits also include a mannequin for modeling, stencils and a short instruction booklet with ideas. These pens have brush tips, which allow for painting-style strokes which can easily be combined with pencil sketches and finished off with watercolors. They are very portable and easy to use, as opposed to traditional brush and ink sets.

Instructions

    • 1

Unpack your pens. In the grayscale set, you will find two fine-tipped pens for drawing fine lines. These are labeled S and M, for small and medium. The other six pens are for broader brush strokes, and are in varying shades of gray. The color set includes red, orange and yellow along with green, blue and violet.

    • 2

Hold a pen in your drawing hand and press it lightly against the paper. You may need to adjust the angle to get the line you want. The pens take a little practice, so draw small circles of varying thicknesses until you get a feel for the brush tips.

    • 3

Outline your character or design with the largest black pen. You can use the included stencils or mannequin as inspiration. Alternatively, you can work from an existing pencil sketch. Work on the included sketch pad or on watercolor paper, depending on the look you are going for.

Use the medium pen for smaller details, like eyes and other facial features. Use the other gray pens for shading. Use darker pens for shadowy areas, while lighter pens can serve to show strands of hair or wrinkling in clothes.
