Purchase a gallery canvas that does not have staples on the side for a more professional look. Place the stretched canvas on a smooth and flat work surface.
Stir the gesso with a paint stirrer. Apply a small amount to the canvas and slowly spread the gesso by moving the squeegee from left to right. Carefully coat the entire canvas in a thin layer, moving in the same direction with each stroke.
Dry the canvas thoroughly with a hair-dryer on the medium setting to speed up the drying process.
Rotate the canvas 90 degrees and apply the second coat of gesso. Always move the squeegee in the same direction.
Repeat the application and drying process up to five times until you cannot see any texture from the original canvas. Rotate the canvas 90 degrees before starting a new layer to ensure even application.
Allow the canvas to dry for up to 48 hours.
Use 120 grit sandpaper to carefully smooth away any imperfections in the gesso. Wipe away residue using a damp cloth.
Repeat the sanding and wiping process three to four times until the canvas is smooth to the touch. Hold the canvas against a light to check for imperfections. Allow to dry completely before using.
