How to Make an Art Canvas

Painting supplies can be expensive. Canvases are one of the most basic tools needed to paint, but they can often be pricey. Fortunately, an art canvas is quite easy to make. All you'll need is some canvas fabric, nails or tacks, and wood or a picture frame. You can make an art canvas frame in any size and style in less than an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 pieces of wood (2 8 ½-by-2-by-2 inch pieces, 2 11-by-2-by-2 inch pieces) Tacks or wood glue Thin nails Hammer Canvas fabric Iron Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

      Hammer together the pieces of wood to create a rectangle. Make sure the edges meet and overlap to create a smooth rectangle.

      Iron your canvas fabric.

      Tack the edge of the fabric to the underside of the frame's short edge.

      Pull the fabric taut over the other edge of the frame, and tack it down on the underside of the wooden frame.

      Pull the fabric tightly over the remaining two sides of the frame and tack the fabric in. Use the hammer to attach the tacks if they are not going into the frame easily.

      Trim off all of the excess fabric.
