How to Make an Art Portfolio Out of Matte Board

Your portfolio is the gateway to your art education and career. The presentation of your portfolio is as important to university administrators and prospective employers as the specific artwork. Mounting the art on matte boards before placing it into your portfolio can help you give a positive, professional impression. There are several types of adhesive that can be used in conjunction with a matte board; the process is the same for all and the choice is dependent upon your preference and the weight of the paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a matte board size that allows for a 1-inch boarder around your artwork. If necessary, trim the matte board with scissors or a paper cutter. Use a ruler to measure before cutting.

    • 2

Place the matte board on a flat surface, such as a table.

    • 3

Lay the artwork on top of the matte board to measure the proper placement. Mark the placement with chalk if using a black matte board or with pencil if using a white board.

    • 4

Remove the artwork and apply the adhesive to the matte board. The most commonly used bonding agents are double-sided tape, spray mount and paste. Choose the adhesive that will work best for your particular piece of art. For example, very thin types of paper will likely adhere better with double-sided tape since the others can cause moisture. Thicker or heavier papers can stick better with the more secure spray mount or paste. Smooth the artwork once it is laid on the matte board to remove any bumps or air holes.

    • 5

Allow the matte boards that used spray mount or paste to dry for eight to 24 hours before inserting in a portfolio.
