How to Make an Art Easel Out of PVC

Easels are used to hold art, chalk board, graphs and many other items. Easels are made to display something without drawing attention away from the displayed item. PVC pipes are an inexpensive alternative to wood when building an easel. A PVC easel can be built in less than two hours for a fraction of what a manufactured easel would cost.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 PVC pipes, ¾-inch diameter, 5-foot long
  • 4 PVC pipes, ¾-inch diameter, 3-foot long
  • PVC pipe, ¾-inch diameter, 2 ½-feet long
  • 2 PVC pipes, ¾-inch diameter, 3-inches long
  • 2 PVC t-connectors, ¾-inch diameter

  • Machine screws
  • 2 chains, 3-feet-long

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a ring of glue around the outside edge of both ends of the 5-foot pipes. Place elbow connectors on both ends of two pipes and one end of the other two pipes. Put the 90-degree port from the T-connectors on the tops of the pipes. The 90-degree port is the port at the bottom if the connector is held like a capital "T." Turn all the elbows on the pipes facing the same direction.

    • 2

Attach the two pipes with elbows at both ends together with a 3-foot pipe. This creates a large "U" shape. Connect the other two pipes in the same way.

    • 3

Apply glue to the inside of the open ports on the elbow connectors and insert the 3-inch pipes into the ports.

    • 4

Insert the 2 ½-foot pipe in the top T connector ports on the other two pipes. This pipe connects the two T-connectors together. Slide the open ports of the T-connectors over the 3-inch pipes and stand the easel upright on the two legs.

    • 5

Lay the last 3-foot pipe across the easel on the back where the supports will be placed for the displayed item. The gutter supports are placed about half-way up the leg or at 2 1/2 feet up the leg. Use the machine screws to attach the supports to the PVC pipe. Screw the gutter supports to the PVC pipe legs with the elbow connectors at both ends and the 3-foot support bar on the back.

    • 6

Measure 1 foot from the top of the easel and mark the location to place the chain. The chain will keep the legs in place. Slide a machine screw through the last link on both ends of one chain and screw it into the pipe at the marked location. Repeat for the other side.
