How to Hand Make a Coating for Photo Emulsions

Careful preparation and safety precautions are essential when making your own photo emulsions. This emulsion compound can be placed on glass plates or on film but is not suitable for clothing or plastic. Emulsion compounds are the catalysts which, when exposed, reproduce your film on a larger scale. According to the Maco Photo Products, emulsion exposure on glass is similar to exposure on standard photographic paper. Hand making photo emulsion coating should be conducted in a clean, safe environment with a red safe light.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a teaspoon of gelatin in about 1 1/2 cups of warm distilled water in a large stainless steel bowl. Add an ounce of potassium bromide to this mixture and stir with a stainless steel mixing utensil. Stir until all the elements have dissolved.

    • 2

Fill a second large bowl halfway with hot water and place the first bowl containing the original mixture into the water bath to heat slowly.

    • 3

Put some protective gloves on. Mix together 1 1/2 ounces of silver nitrate with 1 1/2 cups of distilled water in a separate bowl. Add a couple teaspoons of the silver nitrate to the potassium mixture every thirty seconds, incorporating the nitrate with a stirring motion. This process takes about 10 minutes for all of the silver nitrate mixture to be combined. Leave the finished solution in the water bath for an extra 10 minutes and then remove from the warm water.

    • 4

Fill a small bowl with distilled water. Add 1 1/2 ounces of gelatin to this water and allow to soak. Strain off the extra water. Stir this new gelatin mixture into the silver nitrate and potassium mixture. Leave the mixture to set in the dark for about three hours.

    • 5

Pour the mixture onto a large square of cheese cloth after the mixture has set. Fold up all four corners to create a pouch. Fill a large stainless steel bowl with cold water and squeeze the photo emulsion compound into the water and through the cheese cloth. Strain the excess water off of the strained compound. Fill the pan with cold, fresh water over the compound again. Allow the fresh water to sit with the compound and strain again. Repeat this step two or three more times. Perform this step with protective gloves on.

    • 6

Place the rinsed emulsion compound back into a rinsed stainless steel bowl. Fill a second bowl halfway with warm water. Place the emulsion compound bowl into the warm water bowl and allow to warm for about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from the hot water and allow to cool just slightly.

    • 7

Brush an even layer of photo emulsion compound over the top of a glass plate using a natural fiber brush. Place in a cold, completely dark area to dry for about 30 minutes.
