Every crafter should own a good pair of basic scissors, which are best for cutting normal-thickness paper and construction paper. However, you can also purchase scissors with zigzag and wavy cutting blades--perfect for making decorative edges easily and quickly.
Box cutters are excellent options for making cuts where you can’t cut from an outward edge in. For instance, if you want to cut a shape into a sheet of paper without actually creating a cut going from the outer edge of the paper into the shape, a box cutter can be used to simply outline the shape with the blade, and then pop out the cut shape from the page.
The hole puncher if often used by students to make even, small holes into the sides of sheets of paper for insertion into a binder. However, in crafting, hole punchers can be used to create ornate paper designs comprised of many small holes. Hole punchers come in a basic, one-hole punch design or in a three-in-a-row utility.
A paper trimmer is used when you want to make straight edges quickly. The benefit of using a paper trimmer is that you can stack many pages together and cut at once, without fear of a scissor blade not being able to cut through or making an uneven cut. For projects that require cutting very large pieces of paper, an industrial paper trimmer may be best.
