Paper Cutting Tools

If you are a novice crafter, chances are that you are doing a lot more paper cutting than you have in the past. Unfortunately, no one paper cutting tool will be appropriate for all applications; thus, it’s important that you familiarize yourself with the various paper cutting tools available so that you know which one to use for specific jobs. While there are many paper cutting tools available, some basic tools will provide you maximum versatility.
  1. Scissors

    • Every crafter should own a good pair of basic scissors, which are best for cutting normal-thickness paper and construction paper. However, you can also purchase scissors with zigzag and wavy cutting blades--perfect for making decorative edges easily and quickly.

    Box Cutters

    • Box cutters are excellent options for making cuts where you can’t cut from an outward edge in. For instance, if you want to cut a shape into a sheet of paper without actually creating a cut going from the outer edge of the paper into the shape, a box cutter can be used to simply outline the shape with the blade, and then pop out the cut shape from the page.

    Hole Puncher

    • The hole puncher if often used by students to make even, small holes into the sides of sheets of paper for insertion into a binder. However, in crafting, hole punchers can be used to create ornate paper designs comprised of many small holes. Hole punchers come in a basic, one-hole punch design or in a three-in-a-row utility.

    Paper Trimmer

    • A paper trimmer is used when you want to make straight edges quickly. The benefit of using a paper trimmer is that you can stack many pages together and cut at once, without fear of a scissor blade not being able to cut through or making an uneven cut. For projects that require cutting very large pieces of paper, an industrial paper trimmer may be best.
