Quilters' Cutting Tools

When quilting, having the right cutting tools is important to make the work easier and can help quilters avoid damaging the fabric when it is cut. High-quality cutting tools also can help quilters who suffer from arthritis cut fabric by placing less stress on the joints. Various tools are best for certain projects. Knowing which tools to use can help you complete a quilt and preserve the fabric in the process.
  1. Rotary Rulers

    • Rotary rulers assist in proper measurement of fabrics. Choose a ruler that is see-through so that guessing where to cut the fabric is avoided. See-through rotary rulers make it possible to cut the most precise shapes. Various rotary rulers are used to cut different shapes. For example, a 12.5-inch-by-12.5-inch rotary ruler is helpful when cutting out squares.

    Rotary Cutters

    • According to Sewing.org, rotary cutters changed the way quilters cut fabric. These tools resemble a pizza cutter but are much sharper. Rotary cutters are available in different sizes. Larger blades make cutting many layers of fabric possible. However, this technique is not recommended for beginners because cutting fabric accurately is difficult. When cutting fabric with this tool, use a rotary mat underneath the fabric. A rotary mat keeps the fabric in place while it is cut and protects the surface underneath. Choosing the largest rotary mat to fit your workspace is beneficial because it will allow you to spread out fabric and work on a larger canvas.

    Fabric Shears

    • Fabric shears, or pinking shears, also are available in different varieties and sizes. Although they resemble household scissors, fabric shears are heavier and sharper. It is best to use fabric shears that are sharp because this prevents ruining the fabric and gives a clean line when cutting. They are also available with scalloped edges.
