How to Dry Prang Modeling Clay

Modeling clay allows you to create shapes and figures with ease. Prang modeling clay is available in a variety of colors and two main types: drying and nondrying. Drying clay designed to stay malleable requires the use of additional tools. As of September 2010, Prang modeling clay retails for between $3 and $10 per box. Purchase Prang clay at an art supply store or use online retailers such as Amazon.com and Office Depot.

Instructions

  1. Air-Drying Clay

    • 1

Create a shape or structure using Prang air-drying clay. Keep the clay moist while designing the shape.

    • 2

Set your sculpture on a sturdy table in a warm room. Allow the sculpture to sit for 24 hours.

    • 3

For a smooth texture, sand with a medium or fine-grit sandpaper. Add paint, stain or varnish as desired and air-dry for another 24 hours. For a shiny finish, fire your sculpture in a kiln. Most sculptures need a temperature of about 1750 degrees and a bake time of about 18 hours.

    Nondrying Clay

    • 4

Design your clay sculpture. Do not worry about keeping the clay wet, as nondrying clay stays malleable regardless of temperature or water content.

    • 5

Immediately bake clay in the oven for one hour at 350 degrees. Allow the clay to cool before handling.

    • 6

Apply paint, varnish or stain as desired. Because Prang clay is available in a variety of colors, you may wish to add nothing but a coat of varnish. Allow paint, varnish or stain to dry.

    • 7

Fire your sculpture in a Kiln.
