How to Make a Modeling Clay Mixture

Kids love clay. Molding lumps of colorful modeling clay, or dough, into amusing shapes like giraffes, trees, rockets, boats and even faces is a fun project for a rainy day indoors. According to Pennsylvania State University, you should introduce your kids to modeling clay when they're older than 18 months. Modeling clay will help your kids develop their fine-motor skills, according to Penn State, and a child who plays with modeling play may improve his attention span. Make modeling clay at home and you won't need to drive to the store on that rainy day.

Instructions

  1. Recipe 1

    • 1

Measure 1 cup of cornstarch into a sauce pan using a measuring cup.

    • 2

Measure 2 cups of baking soda into the sauce pan.

    • 3

Measure 1 1/4 cups of water into the sauce pan. Add drops of food coloring if you wish. Each drop you add will make your dough slightly more colorful.

    • 4

Stir the ingredients in your sauce pan. Place the sauce pan on a stove over medium heat. Cook the mixture in the sauce pan while stirring constantly with a spoon until the mixture has the consistency of dough or mashed potatoes.

    • 5

Turn the dough onto a kitchen counter or plastic tray that you have sprinkled with cornstarch and allow the dough to cool before kneading and shaping it into a ball with your hands.

    • 6

Cover your modeling clay with a damp cloth or store it in a plastic bag.
