What Is a Living Museum?

Living museums are attractions that focus on presenting art and history in live action rather than with displays or photos. These museums can be found in all corners of the United States and focus on a wide variety of topics.
  1. Function

    • Living museums present an accurate portrayal of what life was like in a certain time period with the use of live acting instead of books or photographs. These museums provide a more active, hands-on learning environment.

    Types

    • Possibly the most well-known type of living museum is the renaissance fair, where participants immerse themselves in medieval culture. Other themes popular in America include colonialism and the wild west.

    Locatoins

    • Although living museums are located throughout the nation, the most famous is Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Virginia. Other notable locations include Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts and the Wild West Living Museum in West Yellowstone, Montana.
